What is a Nurse Practitioner?
A Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a registered nurse who has completed specific advanced nursing education (generally a master's degree or doctoral degree) and training in the diagnosis and management of common and complex medical conditions. A nurse practitioner can perform many of the duties of a physician. To become licensed to practice, Nurse Practitioners hold national certification in an area of specialty and are licensed through state nursing boards rather than medical boards.
